A sunny day for the last game of the season and an expectant crowd gathered wrapped up warm in coats and scarves to guard against the elements. The highlight of a bumper weekend of sport was about to start and we knew that after a long unbeaten run to get us to the top of the table, a win would be enough to give us the league. Would we clear the last set of hurdles or fall at the last fence.
There was a scrappy start to the game with no real pattern to either side’s play. Dan put Anthony through on goal, but he was tackled just as he was about to shoot.
Hadley went close at the other end, with a shot that went just over the bar.
At the other end, Anthony was brought down, but Connor’s free kick was too good and cleared the bar. Connor was also causing problems with some well placed long passes down the wing, but we were just unable to create a chance to get on the end of them.
So we went into the half time break on level terms, and Phil and Ryan gathered the boys together to seek one more half of effort to end the season on a high.
But we soon found ourselves a goal down in the second half, as Hadley took the lead. We were behind, not for the first time this season, so were not concerned to find ourselves in this position, as we knew that we were capable of getting back into the game.
Before long, we had an even tougher task in front of us, as the Hadley player got his head onto the end of a well delivered corner to double their lead.
Stef then made the first of many excellent saves to keep us in the game.
We then enjoyed “our time” in the game, as Connor, got a shot in from a tight angle, but unluckily saw his shot glance off the woodwork.
We didn’t have to wait long for our next chance, but this time Nathan was denied by the woodwork on the other side of the goal. You started to get the feeling that this wasn’t going to be our day, which happens sometimes.
Stef then made another excellent save at the other end.
Connor’s throw into the box, was met by David, who slotted the ball home to half the deficit, but time was not on our side now.
Stef had to be alert to make another excellent save, as we pushed numbers forward in search of another goal.
Time ran out for us in the game, as we ended the season with a rare defeat, that on the day was probably a fair result.
So we end our season, knowing that we have given everything we could have done played some excellent football and shown great fighting spirit. Like Man Utd, we have got the points on the Board. Pressure can be a great leveller, and time will tell where we will end of with the points that we have gained.
Still it could be worse, you could support Spurs. Oh you do!
